Wilkes-Barre Mayor proposes rental ordinance to fight crime
Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton announced Thursday a proposed ordinance that he's hoping will fight crime in the city. The mayor wants to shutter any rental property for six months if a tenant commits a drug or weapons violation. The mayor announced at a news conference that city attorneys and the police department have been drawing up the proposed ordinance for several weeks in response to the July 7 homicide on South Grant Street. That was the 6th murder this year in Wilkes-Barre. The mayor says he believes the ordinance, if passed, would be one of the toughest rental ordinances in the state. City Council will vote on the ordinance at its meeting Thursday night.
