Luzerne County Controller charged with wiretapping

Luzerne County Controller Walter Griffith has been charged with three felony counts of intercept communications. The Times Leader newspaper reports the State Attorney Generals office filed the wiretapping charges today and he is to appear before District Judge Martin Kane Friday morning. The charges were expected because County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis publicly said in January that Griffith had illegally recorded conversations and supplied them to a grand jury investigating CityVest, the Hotel Sterlings nonprofit owner. Salavantis went on to say that Griffith gave the grand jury recordings of CityVest board member Y. Judd Shoval, attorneys and others who were recorded without their knowledge or consent. The investigation was forwarded to the State Attorney Generals office because it involves another elected county official. Griffith is seeking another term as controller. If convicted, Griffith faces up to 21 years in prison.
