Honoring Those Who Served

Tomorrow Saturday November 11 is the observance of Veterans Day. In honor of the day many municipalities have special schedules today or are closed. That includes administrative offices in Kingston and Wilkes Barre City Hall, Scranton City Hall and Lackawannan County offices and the Courthouse. You may want to call before you head out.  Today is considered a federal holiday so federal offices are closed. Some schools are closed today as are some banks.

To honor Veterans the Luzerne County Transportation Authority will offer Free Rides to all Active Duty Military and Veterans today. Show your Military ID, VA Medical Card or Certificate of Discharge to the driver and you'll receive a commemorative pin and your day bus pass.

This year, Veterans Day also marks the first day of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an annual initiative to educate the public on how they can help fix the critical but solvable problems of homelessness and food insecurity.

For more information about Stand Downs scheduled during or after Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, visit https://www.va.gov/homeless/events.asp or contact a local VA Medical Center.

To learn more about VA programs and services that help Veterans exit homelessness and remain stably housed, visit www.va.gov/homeless. Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness should visit their local VA Medical Center or contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-4AID-VET (877-424-3838).
