Express our sorrow so I'm about philosophy stunned I most most time. It's expect to be very very difficult for you still. Thank you Suzanne thank you Jack. Around the co on the show this week. Thanks Sony I appreciate it. Tony would you please come and tell us a little bit about about your son Tony. Tony was that he was either very hard core of it's turning actually little children. Section granddaughters. Oh he loved them very much for me he spends a lot of time with very he would. Statements could presumably would take in the hard he was he really wasn't very. Devoted father. Let's from the current tone was just seeing. Or actually Arum short change routine he loose. I was struggling with jobs home. What I have called him. An addict I fourteen of 1505. He. He was getting high regularly. You. I would certainly it was recreational in the beginning. Eight we had just moved from Philadelphia there. Just south Jersey with this first air high school. So I don't really have insurance at all where we had moved to say I'm. I'm sure got a good group of people you know and he got height and I think that was the slaughter. Of him I guess still being hints. I don't know for sure yeah food she believed she was. And so the end and I think they'd leave their drugs. Kind of mixed a lot this year he's happy. About. You know going to a new squalls fielding with his life you know just every day. Saying NN which later turned into an addiction and a very serious addiction. And in March. You know he had that one moment of weakness what I like to call it. That really is what it is and now I'm. It up on. Did he did Tony talk to you about his addiction or even more so about his his fears or anything that he's trying to mask recover. We are in the beginning he denied it completely. I seem very judiciously. He denied it. Then more as she went to rehab the first time that you didn't wanna go. It was forced him to go and and we came out here really see many different his body might have been anybody's mind certainly was not. You see it really well. Shore or at least a year. And then obviously showed itself again we're just trying. She wanted help this time. He recognized that there was a problem. Saying he wanted to get help so he went into rehab. Again. G. He really tried I mean she did when she came at a rehab. He would differ I icing something different than the first time and he had borne and and he really got in solve in his church. And yeah speaking more distress they're paying. You know all these different groups these. Traffic groups that he was getting involved Bailey's. And I know he wanted to be involved and I beating get involved like I should have. And it wasn't until Charlie can't say it I need I didn't know I'd say you know I. All of these carriage that I merits are harboring this horrific guilt. Because they show like they didn't do enough or big picture marching may. They pushed them. It in truth and the truth saves. It attitude is that true page you don't know what you don't know until you know. So. You know do I should badge and cars and pay if I'd had been more supportive. It Friday showed him the love and support that he needed instead of yelling at him and questioning him and being old self righteous they handling like change you just created why don't you have the strength to do it. Why are you so all of those things. And I realize that all of those things not only didn't it help told me. They've perpetuated. This state red that is fair bet badly. Most people. He'll or bullied because that's what we've been training. You know through faith and now. In reality if I would have done all those things what it actually Tony will be the actual truth there's I don't know group like no one. It's totally on me edges I'm sure. How bad it was was subject well the one thing you just said Tony route. Sure you're known. You and I know each other you know I work in new in the recovery business. Here in the studio today with visiting my daughter Carly who is our production assistant. My daughter. Has been through treatment twice and is now in recovery. But she was in my own house Tony and I do this every day of the week and didn't see that she needed help. And I didn't recognize it. She was Jennifer going to work as a counselor every day she was living what I thought was a relatively normal life for 25 year old kids. And she was right in front of me. And I didn't see it so. Yeah are there are days I say to myself just like you just said. Sure I've done some consumers should I have seen some insurers recognize that the answer is no I mean this is what it is it is right now today. We have no way of knowing if you had done something differently what is changing the outcome. Because. The outcome is where were app right now. And know how we change. The way the world looks at this and that's why you're that's where your mission it was passed Dan brown and white. That sir I'm trying and you know peek its star and I'm you know unfortunately. Or fortunately whatever way you wanna look at it. It's it's politically done one person at a time. And I say fortunately. Because it's much easier to relate to someone and I understand they're paying them what they're going through. When you're dealing with someone more norm wants but I say unfortunately because. When you're the only one or more. That message takes that much long. Figured out. It's a long row one at a time yes exactly there we just gotta we gotta keep going one up time. You have to keep or warm as far as you know I I ate I try to talk to as many people as warrants as I can I talk to individuals. Anyone who emails me or comes up to me I make the car and to speak with them because. You know pain is pain but the truth. Check. And streams and they are true there's India and. In the game. Those that are in recovery. Those that are dealing. What's what I believe this disease of addiction in meat and the ultimate choice small always fall upon. Very foods that are in the fight because. You can support you can log you can talk you can feed bear but in the end we make our own choices. The problem is where words which I believe this is literally destroy. Those that are fighting so hard. In the recovery. Is it's an unbelievable. Fight unto itself. And you already feel alone and you feel life. You know that drugs be it fiction leisure fray and because it's me asking whatever it is that is so incredibly difficult. Just fate and it's not your friend it is a liar and are we need perpetuate that lie. By making. Those that are struggling to. Feel alone we make them feel like they're weak we make them feel like their loser so in the end they're fighting their. Within themselves and their so desperately trying to come out on the other side and here we are not only just people that love to have. But people that we don't know people that we just pitch in the street already have been actually years of those that are struggling they don't even know there. Yards if you can't beat it did big crushing weight. All of that big men I believe and I've said this over and over again is shot. And deadly if not even more word gad who then the actual addiction itself. Tony I'm in a 100% agreement with you because people in recovery we have our fight a daily fight to remain clean and sober. But then we have that led other aspect of community work in the people around us. And when that look at us like there's something wrong when dust beaten beyond addiction like they they look at us like we're less than. And and that's not the case you and I both know. Every walk of life resume recovery every job every reach every financial status everybody's in recovery. But there's a whole group out there the whole world around us is a shame to say I know somebody in recovery or my son or my daughter my husband or wife for mothers and recovery. There are ashamed of that. And that makes us so much harder for a person to stand up and say I need help. I need I don't know where to turn people are embarrassed to ask for help we have to get we have to remove that stigma. You know I am also one and just add something from the family's perspective. How Alice Hanley members feel succumb because I lost to in my immediate family come from addiction. And Jack's right in Tony your right because it's it's I who is. I wanna talk about it so I was a family member who felt that she could go to no one. No one to talk about what was going on. And so. The isolation. As a family member is very strong because of that stigma out do you think everyone else out there is having this remarkable tremendous life. And if you talk to anyone your frequent or something wrong with you or worse what did you do to cause it. What did you do defeated. So does the ripple effect of addiction is just it's just so sick and sick within our society. It's got to change it just it has to change. Read you know it's amazing since we every every single work that you just say every word. Every single stand inspect came out of your math. In this same thing. That those in recovery. Say to themselves every day that's why. I tried it all families. When your love bought it in recovery. Used to. Are you recovery to and that's just sadly so sick they are great recovery. That you are understand more than you do. Those in recovery or shape just very. What what they're stealing pear shaped. To be around people always tell them that they need help they feel helpless they feel hopeless than say feelings. That those who love them. And their families feel while those loved ones are struggling throats and they eat. We're recovery. For any Warren who had a family. Didn't straw weight and the family members are both orbit saying the war room to work although. They need to welcome parallel program Tony the family app Andy at eight. Both together have to be working on parallel program of recovery and have to be seeing the same things. They have to be in sync with each other to spread this message recovery. That's exactly rep but most people feel like I did and bone dry. I have to type someone said something may and I know Jack you really be able to appreciate steps. The big struggle lie ahead is most of my youth. I was. I was a mess yeah. I mean crystal meth was mare. My job good choice. And then I almost I almost lost my life from that and I stopped and that was twenty. Something years ago now over thirty maybe thirty years ago okay. And I didn't understand. Why she couldn't just stop I mean I almost died and I just stopped and someone jinx me. And it may be state beta and it made it very clear to me. They regularly holy. You know jet and I'm like what helped me get. And they say Tony you. You had a drug problem. You were not an attic. Theory is that there exist for all distinction. Between having a drug problem. And being an attic. They truly are chicken different situations. Because like someone who says I'm an alcoholic or someone says I had a drinking problem if you can stock. If you'd heard rarely go you know what sort of stop. And I couldn't do this anymore I got a bit alcohol is Israel in my life and other drug sure my life and tomorrow not gonna pick up another jury. Am pretty hard anymore and then 35 years later. You're here sorry someone told you you figured I had a problem and the very next day it was over. You do that you had a drinking problem you had you had a drug problem foot Storm Warren who was involved in it Dick chin. Drugs are not recreational. Today and those drugs are not something that they do to pay the price because their board. Or there's something they can't do. Those drugs are still doing. Something those drugs are you may have been something that is even more terrifying. To ban. Very narrowly batted picture and it destroys everyone around them that problem it's so difficult this strain that's why I hope people use you. Ghost PR and the body. Various various something. In that person's slice there's something about the personality. There's something well in bam. That is so scary for a ban this faith. Or they believe that they can't be who they are would doubt that draws and that is an incredibly. Difficult fight. Because you're not fighting just enthralled. Or about how hard you're fighting the problem that the hardy isn't there. Understand Tony we're gonna talk more about this we just have to take a quick break to thank our sponsors who make this show possible. Will be right back. Since 1972. Tony is a Philadelphia based restaurant her entrepreneur or actor and singer. I meant I hung around a really great guy come Tony's here today though. As a father who lost a son to addiction on Tony's son died in March 2017. And before the break we were talking about stigma we were talking about shame we are talking about the guilt. And things that those. Who are left behind. Lived through. But what Tony has done now is Tony has started a national movement it's called ash Ted brown and white asked and Brandon Lloyd is named. After the two primary colors of heroin and it really is dedicated to ending the stigma associated with both viewed and heroin addiction. We need families. To move beyond the shame and the blame. And with constant love and support addiction can be defeated. One small victory at a time on Tony if you would. Could you talk a little bit about the last few days I'm leading up to your son's death. He would. He was he had a sense. Well I I need to go a little bit sure. And in the weeks trials. There was this sense of hopelessness and who's up. Almost as best. The addiction. Was so overwhelming to him. That. She didn't think. He can fight it anymore he was working. I had a friend of mine's place. But he wanted to be back working with community and I wanted him back. And circumstances came up where that was possible. And he turned to work through very shorter stay and there was a glimmer of hope I saw something in his guys. That wasn't fair and we act and we talked and he worked so hard. Five guys that previously was a very hard worker. Charlie worked so hard news grade on the grow you lose. We and you sweat it was more seasons so that we came out do or die. Are we going to be okay. I mean not all always going to be all right because. I've really been humble guy and I really wanted to do right by my fiance and my daughter's. I really want the opportunity do right try again and I says if you wanna got here. And we're gonna be okay Tony and then he worked his second day in the third day and then the very last day of the week when he worked he used his body was beaten fairly with. It was mopping the floor and the fact was killed in this league structure elements. And I can tell you're good enough fossil emissions. And I drew what I've got this Cuba homes exam not dynamite go home and you look at me. And Reggie bat. I'm really try really tries that I know more I showed them we're gonna we're gonna get through this to GAAP total to GAAP. Me do this family we are gonna get through this and I hugged him and I cheered them. And he went home and the next day was Monday. And it was 8:30 in the morning and I wanted to hold him so really just tell him how our laws and can. And that was gonna take a lot of work where we were gonna get through days and I don't you know why we worked so late last night let him sleep. And then the big obviously. And I was doing here I understand. My phone rang at 6 o'clock who had just six. And now I couldn't make out what my son Michael was saying was crying. And all I heard was the word dead. And our our brand out of the building could be kept breaking up and I heard was this citing no way die. And I remember bursting through this side doors. Probability I was saying. And I said Michael what did you say. And we see it says that Stacy that was my son's warrants say. That stage she called and told he's dead. Letting out a whale. And my worst nightmare ever. Had. Time to be me. And. But weeks prior to its own sorry. I remember I wanna try your best I can't tell who's worked day. What do you say you know a corner. Where the agents got a great it was all sweaty shall work and then there was top so summer. And I can't buy you didn't see war I wanted to stop over and say hello to him. And his skating on a quarter. And he had this saturn's. Most hopeless look. That I have ever received. And I remember saying god. Is YE busy posturing so mobs. He was in such pain. So much pain. At all I can remember strain does god say that came from them some. Teach me how many satellites. Take that case from home. And men. I guess he went home. And they now of the addiction it's just so powerful. And it speaks in. Your mind I don't know he was thinking and I'm when he used a list of what I have. I just got to get through today. Maybe he didn't believe. That there was hope may even see open was strong enough because I gotta tell you if I didn't support in my bag showed us. That much I do know again I'm not saying that would have made him not faking it or hate it. But the reason I speak to parents. Is because I was unbelievably good poster. So it's not like I'm getting up aaron's always Tori had help all both perfect spot where our laws and how amazing I understood his addiction and and this is what you need to do. Do you like me now are saying these are the best state. That I made. Things that I think I could have done better. These are good things about my around the mice aren't. Seven fortunately I didn't understand. Or get in here until he has to say. So when he asked all of those things are said to me all the guitar I said he asked me questions. And I'd I and I didn't want it answered and at times I was frustrated with and and I sort of check it out the door and I. And I was angry at him. We've never realizing that it was that big chin that I was angry with my son's been here screaming to get out. Stagnant they get out and I didn't know what to do and I didn't know what to do because we don't. Speak to each other so we don't talk families don't talk. There's no big there's no no one seems fairly discusses this and talk to we child. And I thought for a bit my mind calling. For the rest of my life so good day I die. Is it do whatever I can we get Stanley speaking. And walking and and and and learning from each other so it will be at the very least. They had enough knowledge. To give it much support for those that they love that they possibly can. And hash tag brown and white was born. I'd like brown or white is of viral campaign. I social media campaign. Because every one is a social me every one young people old people and I thought people there are not experiencing. Best. Really not that they don't air it dubbed the fact that so when things don't affect you. You know you don't do it please don't do it because. That's just the way human nature. So I thought how to write get through these kids had a white get to be Sam. Well the what do I do now most people find out about things. Sir what they called try and so when something or social media is trending. People click here they go forward advance you know there's. 200000 people tweeting about this or it is the grand a year or Ford had you don't FaceBook what is this. And then it would make them aware so originally. Had tag ran a white was. What is meant to have people who have lost a loved one. You're going to social media. Spare picture and let the world know that there were not losers and that they were not we. They were fathers and sons and daughters and Brothers and sisters and mothers they were they were loved ones who made it. And struggled and died dealing with this. Horrible disease of addiction. And I wanted them to not be Sherry. A tie it up so that may be other parents would see this. And then they would do that and it would start chipping away the stigma and then what happens which was amazing. Someone. Chad Bagram or more I visited the war and this is my love Warren and I stated in an interview. That my son is not and number. That he was human being Betty watch in this statistics. And so one hash tag someone who was in recovery. Chad and I are you not a number. And then I thought wow. People recovery. Are responding to hash tag ran why not just family so then my mission was. Not only get grammys sneaking what I tell people everyone that's listening to your show. How much courage does it is safe to go your social media every bell. For choose set things and right. I love you I support you I am where you figure out there we can beat there. Hash tag Berman why let those in recovery yelled at people beside their family. Chair about then you're doing your show. Or recovery. Because you care about those bush tribal. People are out there speaking you're talking to Gordon runs they're doing the doing all these things. Because big cheer but the problem is what is the waters over. Once your show and and people collect call they go about their life. And they don't follow through most of them so I help people goalie and it every day. Let make that a habit of what you're doing and it will train don't mention my name I would never say. In any. Speaking. I endeavored dogs forget Tony junior Tony junior's completely insignificant. What you need to remember past I ground and white. Good bad it's been moved it it's your move was. It removes limits my movement is how we movement should have nothing absolutely nothing. I don't hear if you can never remember what I look like it may goods fell out of my voice or my business. I just want you remember how I Graham and white. Because if that trend that's what people need to remember not my name I don't know what my 88. The bid and the long would actually I'd rather YE I just worn. Those those who love and support messages. Out there were people who need pain here. K we're gonna talk more about the messages in the end those who are now following your trend in campaign cash grab brown and white has tagged brown and white. We had to take a quick break will be right back. Arch don't recovery center of the palm beaches provides addiction treatment senator within the small personal community kind. And we're talking about hash tag brown and white so Tony tell us a little bit more about how this campaign is trending. And it's it's it it's really amazing. At how how well. These big campaign at all and especially with families that are. That are. Are really willing to should get involved. Should try to bring other Sharon released into the discussion. Of what they're going true with a loved one struggling where addiction and I think she is going out every day I do as many interviews is like charity to really. Pushed the black hash tag I go on my social media. And I post. Joseph brown and white as much as I Charron. And it it it it's doing it's doing well anything you want to meet one other person. Hash tag if it's doing well. Because like we know. You know I I believe prediction is is is more and Warren one's person and warns stepped it Atari you know I I if if that's. If there's a hundred people in the room and are you now I don't hear a word I'm saying why is it read your nature of one person there and we did a great and I say they've actually Brian white is doing exceptionally well. I believe it is it is reaching people are and what helped like what you guys you guys doing your show Suzanne Arlen. And end all of these things we do get the word out even more people can get a much broader discussions. Go so it's doing well but I've always my dream is. That you know it trains every day because the bids they call it OP always crisis. And an epidemic. Which is say. It is is an incredibly strong word but what we don't realize is that we're we're we're loosely be be human rate is sorry. We as a people. All our stories. From all with and against out one simple thing there's a lot of forms through this. This problem but this is just one of those talks and this is the ways that are yea it's. And I push as much as I can that hopefully. Biden what we're doing here today. And what are your listeners. All are doing and going out and making a difference. That maybe this farm can extract all the other organs. And and together we can come up with the real the real solution. Right Tony yes I you've heard me say that. Politicians do their thing and organizations do everything in doctors and lawyers do what they do but I do this on the street level. One person at a time. And then when users and nine people in the room one person here has been great if nobody hears me now they I don't care a lot of the next room and try again. But somehow we have to bring this all together shall we can all work for the common result witches. Helping people that addiction and helping families. The dual component of this LT addict help the family help everybody understand which helps everyone get better. Because it tastes like George Tony or Suzanne where you lose someone you have to go one. And you have to figure out how you can heal and still continue to recover. Just because you're adding die surpass the way. Your recovery doesn't stop you go to recovery every day of your life from now on. Or YouTube that's very that's very very true and and a lot his dad live and love what. A fact. And entire family. When someone can't Suze. Through an overdose. What happened this family's. When someone leaves it's someone that it is is is is died sore and ask for their nose through shall play or two whatever. You know people say well you know why it happened. You know it was God's will whatever people say they say it was horrible and it feel what they're put there was nothing I can do. And the truth is what family members who lobby support is all you can do what they see through thing. That was someone chances from a drug overdose. That may archer boy that they cause they said they aired the reach. That their loved one has fair and weigh you when someone dies. You know loss is very difficult but I say over and over again. Loss can be mad and so I'm not saying. Blue BL you'll be forever you know he'll be the strain. Loss can be marriage was guilt can never be matched and still won't dish Troy you and destroy your entire term. And people have to learn how to let so that guilt because they truly don't have the hour. She'll make those decisions. What he has three window we make our own decisions. We can give people lobby support and let them know that we are airstrip there. But we are not job we can't waves are over someone's. And he'll back. I wish we could because I spent the rest of my life failing you know lie just waiting my normal for people trust us we don't have that out. And Tony earlier do you use and a word which I talked about every day and it's fear. Dan that joked that were feeling is fear. Does fear that I did something wrong with my daughter that's why why did my daughter get into a position that she's there was addiction. Fears that I am I somehow let her down not only do I feel fear that I. Let her down I feel true I let her sister's down her mother down and the people around her down. Because I mean being what I've been through war timeout I feel like I should've known better form my own daughter you couldn't see it. So yes I deal with that fear that. And and then guilt that you just described every day. My daughter now is doing great but I lay in bed every night and worry. Is today than they want something could go wrong did I miss something else. And why now why helicopter father that constantly on her are you okay what's going on do you need anything. And and that's a horrible way for family members to live and a star boyfriend adding to lift. And that's why we're here today and that's why I'm so I have I want you to be on the show you know that. Are okay. I've in that and next literally the next month or so I have a lot of debate schedules you to speak. You know at a high school and then I had some other and sit. Different. Centers. Certainly just this week. Two people so I'm right now it's really been a grassroots campaign. Like I'm trying to on the road all the times I'd rear I rarely turn down. Anything unless you're pro it'll let you can actually have something then I'm sure you're already the best way to get a hold of me or questions or. Anything they wanted to I had big Tony Gwynn junior page. On baseball and there's also they eat hash tag brown and white USA. Page orange faced all and then Twitter. Is fat Tony move junior. And there's also and I. Brown and white. US and is ANC. Not to assemble packers' ground and why eight US is stage where. And there's my instant Graham wage here is actually do junior's well. And then I have a wonderful. Group of people. Sue and Greg chin. And and you know I'll blog you people Donnie you are street quite work whereas. You know and yes Jack he's been incredibly helpful in the pairs as well. You know easily soldier in the war you know he is and the like you said he didn't expect a bit. And everyone is playing great and healthy but it's it's it's a legitimate things really go the only thing I don't do it right that is in the beginning. Is I don't I don't sponsor anything like I won't come out for Pei and say hey. Go to this recovery center or bow here. Because that's not my job outlook for our white stars Brad a white used for all Sanders all people. You know there's no arm arm you know Miley agency established Rory and this statement our predictions. And are I think it's bad boys can be better heard. When you know. Brad white hat tegra white is an associated. Was born in particular. You know scanner or organization. Tony. What were we go next what were you seeing that we have to take. How we spread this message better I don't I don't understand the question right how how we do this Tony Tony we go from here where we go next. Once you knock it on every store and the next thing I wanna do it I'm trying to work out now is to do the very sure Ers. Trashed tag brown and white as bad. Where I'm trying to bring all of this Sanders to gather. All of all of those battery recovery and all of the shabby actually added at a public place. And speech and walked two and let people really understand what hash tag brown and white really is. Besides just being a viral. Campaign hash tag Brandon YE. It is as they paid into the house where people can go and speak freely and not worried about being judged. Or screen dad or left that. And I believe that's where the evolution of hacked by ground await those. And I believe the next revolution is for what I would love to do as people outside of Philadelphia. People beat comedies the leader of hash tag brown and white in Chicago. And those picking up the fight for addiction in Atlanta remember this had been my movement. You know warming email me they're glad your commission. Says it's all about Patrick Brown or white I'm like it's not my it's not mighty add. It is worried you'll hurt. Of course you talk about how that and that's what I need to get out to people that this did they are moving to cure movement Jackie cures. Suzanne it's your listeners movers. We'll pick it up and other cities. And perpetuate. What hash tag brown or white really stands for and what we're really trying to do. And ultimately what we're really trying to do is remove that stigma Tony. But that's right or lose stigma that because I have an addiction or my child has an addiction something. That we have to remove that stigma that that's it that's like something less them. That that person is up there's no less than human being a person with cancer is that less than a personal heart disease is no less than. A person was an addiction as you pointed out earlier it's not a choice is not recreational that went bad is an addiction it's it's it's them it's an ailment. And we had them right both. Never will never move that state which act in less people understand. Why did fiction those are the only way to do that. It's through discussions just what you're doing and that value and the state. And the truth is Tony did this radio station has he bought this radio show has evolved. Out of a conversation that I had one day would you wouldn't ensue in Downey said corporal. And threw up a guy named Gary in Philadelphia that has a radio show that Gary gray haired kid. And Daniel and he was my daughter's a landlord for two or three years I didn't even know radio show. And and that's why did that's where this came from to help spread that message that you have presented to me then you'll I sat and talked about and that's where this one day I said Suzanne we got to start a radio show we don't have that here we don't have a voice here in the northeast.
