A disaster in the making

The GOP House is about to hurt Americans

We are on the verge of Republicans pushing through a repeal and replace plan that will do serious damage to healthcare in America.  As one of the many people with a pre-existing condition, I’m afraid that many people will die because they cannot get coverage or will be waitlisted for a high-risk pool to get the care they need.  I have what’s called the BRCA-1 gene.  If you remember Angelina Jolie’s story, she was BRCA positive and had prophylactic surgery to prevent breast and ovarian cancer.  When you are BRCA 1 positive, you have a high risk of breast cancer, especially at a young age when it’s more aggressive.  I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at the age of 39.  I had numerous surgeries and treatment.  The bigger concern with BRCA is the risk of ovarian cancer, which is very deadly and there is very little testing that can be done to find it early.  Some people assume that someone with a pre-existing condition did something to create that problem.  I didn’t smoke or drink or eat too much.  I simply was born with a bad gene.  This is not just a problem for me, but possibly for my children and grandchildren. High risk pools have been a disaster pre-Obamacare.  The premiums were extremely high, and many people were waitlisted and didn’t get the care they needed.   Here’s a quote from a CNN Money Report:

"Prior to the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, 35 states operated high-risk pools, and they were not a panacea for Americans with pre-existing medical conditions," said Andrew W. Gurman, president of the American Medical Association. "The history of high-risk pools demonstrates that Americans with pre-existing conditions will be stuck in second-class health care coverage -- if they are able to obtain coverage at all."

Here's a link to the full story.

What’s scary is that a good amount of GOP Housemembers who have serious concerns about this law, will still vote for it, all because they need to get a ‘win’ for the President. They are rolling the dice and gambling with people’s lives, so they can hope to retain their seat.  A real hero is former Congressman Chris Carney of the 10th District here in Pa.  He was on our WILK morning show before voting for the Affordable Care Act.  He said that he knew his vote would put his job in jeopardy, but he was doing it anyway because it was the right thing to do.  That is courage.  What the Republicans are doing right now is cowardly, and it will be costly to them in the long run.
