Tens of thousands of folks in NEPA are struggling without power as a powerful winter system brought heavy snow and gusty winds that snarled traffic and downed trees and power lines. Crews are working around the clock to restore power and emergency crews are trying to clear out roads that have been closed stranding motorists.  The hardest hit areas have been the Poconos, Wayne and Susquehanna Counties.  Vehicle crashes shut down parts of Interstate 380, 80 and 84…..some motorists have been stranded for hours.  To make matters worse, Verizon wireless is down in much of the area, leaving customers with no way to call for help in case of an emergency. The State police urge you to use a landline if possible or go to the nearest police or fire station if there’s an emergency. The Governors office has activated the Pa. National Guard to help in the storm ravaged areas. Those members are reporting to their local armories to begin assisting emergency crews overnight and Saturday.
